Universal Pipe Expansion Joint 

The main function of a universal expansion joint is to manage lateral movements beyond the capacity of a single expansion joint. It is composed of two bellows connected by a pipe spool. The degree to which it can accommodate lateral deflection is contingent on the angle each bellow can withstand. Modifying the space between the bellows, which involves adjusting the length of the pipe spool, can alter the amount of lateral deflection and consequently change the spring rate of the joint.

The universal expansion joint has many advantages due to its absorption capacity to different types of displacement, such as axial, lateral, and angular movements. Tie rods can restrict these movements in the piping system and counterbalance the pressure thrust. Moreover, joints that are specifically designed for lateral movement maintain their overall length even when the pipeline undergoes thermal expansion, thus effectively mitigating this common issue.
