Common Types of Seals and Gaskets
- Chemical Resistance Gaskets: Gaskets made from materials such as PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene), Viton®, EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer), and Kalrez® are commonly used in the chemical industry due to their excellent resistance to a wide range of chemicals, including acids, bases, solvents, and corrosive fluids.
- Flange Gaskets: Flange gaskets are used to create a seal between flanged pipe connections, valves, pumps, and other equipment in chemical processing plants. They prevent fluid leakage and maintain pressure integrity in piping systems.
- Mechanical Seals: Mechanical seals are used to prevent leakage between rotating or reciprocating shafts and their housings in pumps, mixers, agitators, and other rotating equipment. They consist of a stationary and rotating seal face pressed together with a spring or other mechanism, often with a secondary seal such as O-rings or elastomer bellows. - PTFE Envelope Gaskets: PTFE envelope gaskets, also known as Teflon® envelope gaskets, consist of a PTFE outer shell filled with a compressible core material such as rubber or flexible graphite. They offer excellent chemical resistance and are used in applications where the sealing surface must be protected from corrosive chemicals or where high purity is required.
- Spiral Wound Gaskets: Spiral wound gaskets are use in high-pressure and high-temperature applications in the chemical industry. They consist of a metal winding strip and a filler material such as graphite or PTFE. Spiral wound gaskets provide excellent resilience, sealing performance, and chemical resistance.
- O-Rings and Seals: O-rings and seals made from chemical-resistant elastomers such as Viton®, EPDM, and Kalrez® are used to seal static and dynamic connections in valves, pumps, fittings, and instrumentation. They provide reliable sealing performance and resistance to a wide range of chemicals.
- Expansion Joint Seals: Expansion joint seals are used to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction in piping systems handling hot or cold chemicals. They prevent leaks and damage to equipment caused by thermal stress and vibration.
- Diaphragm Seals: Diaphragm seals are used to isolate pressure instruments from corrosive chemicals, preventing damage to sensitive instrumentation while ensuring accurate pressure measurement.
