What is rubber and elastomers extrusion?

Rubber and elastomers extrusion is a manufacturing process used to create continuous lengths of rubber or elastomeric materials with a specific cross-sectional profile. Extrusion involves forcing a rubber or elastomeric compound through a die, which shapes the material into the desired form as it emerges on the other side. This process is commonly used in the production of various rubber products, such as gaskets, seals, hoses, tubing, and profiles.

Process

The production of rubber and elastomeric extrusions begins with material preparation, involving a blend of raw materials like rubber polymers, fillers, curing agents, and additives. Typically, in the form of pellets, sheets, or strips, this compound serves as the foundation for the extrusion process. Subsequently, the compound is fed into an extruder, a machine with a rotating screw that propels the material through a specially designed die. As the material exits the extruder, the die imparts the desired shape.

The extruded material then undergoes vulcanization, a critical step involving heating and curing to attain the final properties, including strength, elasticity, and chemical resistance. Vulcanization occurs in ovens or through other curing methods, tailored to the material's specific requirements. Following vulcanization, the extruded material is cooled and either cut into desired lengths or coiled for subsequent processing. This comprehensive process yields continuous lengths of rubber or elastomeric materials with specific cross-sectional profiles, suitable for various applications across industries.

Benefits

Rubber and elastomers extrusion offers several advantages, including the ability to produce complex shapes with consistent dimensions, high production rates, and cost-effectiveness for large quantities.

The resulting products exhibit properties such as flexibility, resilience, and resistance to various environmental factors, making them suitable for a wide range of applications across industries like automotive, construction, and manufacturing.

Waterjet Cutting

Waterjet cutting is a manufacturing process that uses high-pressure water to cut materials into specific shapes and designs. We can cut anything from 4” moly bars to ceramic tiles.
